I am preparing for a September trip to Scotland. This will be my first time in the country, and by all accounts, a good pair of comfortable, waterproof hiking boots should be top on my list of travel supplies.
I’ve gone back and forth on which type of boot is best. From wellies to trail boots to more casual hikers, I’ve tried them all. Like Goldilocks, I struggle to find the perfect fit. The REI Flash TT Hiking Boot looked like a good mix of characteristics I am looking for. Street style look and feel, waterproof, good arch support and lightweight cushioning, good reviews and – best of all – on sale! What do I have to lose?
This past weekend, I took a quick trip to the hills of south central Arkansas for a bit of trail running and exploring. My new REI boots arrived just in time to try them out. It had been raining off and on for a couple of days, so I knew the terrain would still be slippery. They looked like they would have great grip. Yes! I took them out of the box, laced them up and away I went.

I did not get far. In fact, I never made it to the trail in these boots. By the time I made the 3 hour drive, I had a horrific hot spot near the pinkie toe of my right foot. I could not wait to stop and get that dang boot off! That’s why you won’t see any photos in this post showing the boot in action. They are just too narrow in the toe box for me.
So my hunt for the best Scotland adventure boot continues. I love Topo trail shoes. Their boot is next on my list.
Suggestions? I’d love to hear them!
